About this session

This session will explore where trade policy and cooperation fit into wider international efforts to mobilize finance and investment for climate mitigation, adaptation, and climate-resilient development priorities in developing countries. Recognizing the recurring impacts of the climate crisis on the competitiveness and trade prospects of developing countries, especially the most vulnerable, the discussion will explore where trade and finance can better work together in the context of recovery from climate shocks. It will also review the linkages between trade, debt, and climate vulnerabilities in the context of climate impacts and net zero transitions, identifying opportunities to improve coordination across the trade, finance, and investment communities to support developing countries to bolster resilience, promote green industrialization, and capture emerging opportunities in clean trade, economic diversification, and sustainable value chains.

Framing Questions

What are the specific opportunities to enhance coherence among trade, finance, and investment policies and instruments to support climate action and climate-resilient development?

Where does trade fit into wider efforts to mobilize climate and development finance, as well as private investment in the climate-related resilience and green industrialization priorities of developing countries?

What kinds of research and policy analysis are needed to identify priorities and boost policy coherence on these interlinked challenges? What are key venues and processes that provide opportunities to connect the dots and drive effective cooperation?
