Chief Technical Advisor, African Continental Free Trade (AfCFTA) Secretariat
Gilberto DF António is Chief Technical Advisor at the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, where he drives key initiatives in investment, digital trade, intellectual property rights (IPR), and capacity-building. With a strong commitment to Africa's economic integration, he plays a central role in shaping the continent's trade and development landscape.
Between 2021 and May 2025, Mr António served as Senior Advisor to the Secretary-General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, where he was instrumental in supporting high-level diplomacy, strengthening strategic partnerships, and deepening engagement with the African Union and global institutions.
Earlier in his career, he represented Angola as Trade Negotiator to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. In this role, he actively contributed to multilateral trade negotiations and led efforts in trade-related capacity-building.
Mr António also brings valuable experience from the financial sector, having worked with the renowned French bank BNP Paribas, and from academia, where he lectured at the Geneva Business School.
He has published six books on trade and diplomacy.
He holds degrees in Political Science and Economics from the University of Geneva, and in Statistics from the University of Neuchâtel, along with certifications from several international institutions.
He is fluent in English, French, and Portuguese, and brings a truly global and multilingual perspective to his work.
