Antonin Vergez

Senior Economist, International Union for Conservation of Nature

Antonin Vergez is a Senior Economist in IUCN's Economy and Finance Team. Since 2021 he has worked on biodiversity finance, environmentally harmful subsidies, natural capital accounting, the STAR metric and the links between agricultural support, biodiversity, and trade. He currently advises four European countries on identifying and reforming environmentally harmful subsidies under a European Commission Technical Support Instrument project. He was lead author of IUCN's 2025 report Agricultural support, biodiversity, and trade.

Before joining IUCN, Antonin spent twelve years at the French Ministry for the Ecological Transition. As Head of the Common Goods Economics Team (2017–2021), he shaped inter-ministerial and EU negotiations on greening EU trade policy, working on agreements including CETA, EU-Mercosur and EU-Indonesia. Earlier, he coordinated the modelling for France's first Low Carbon Strategy. He has also taught EU trade policy and the environment at Sciences Po Paris.

He trained as an agronomist and economist at AgroParisTech and holds a PhD in social sciences based on fieldwork in Mexico, where he worked with Cirad and CIMMYT on sustainable agriculture. He has published on the deforestation footprint of international trade, policy coherence, and biodiversity mainstreaming. He works in French, English, and Spanish.
