About this session

This session will identify how the trading system can contribute positively to scaling approaches that offer positive mutual benefits for climate, nature, and sustainable development. It will identify topics, sectors, and opportunities for collective action and cooperation on trade and nature that are critical to achieving both climate and sustainable development priorities (e.g. from innovations in trade agreements, sectoral arrangements, trade infrastructure, and international standards to approaches that enable and incentivize sustainable finance and investment).

Framing Questions

How can trade policies, rules, and agreements be more responsive and adaptive to emerging nature and climate risks at the global and regional level in ways that also generate benefits for sustainable development priorities?

What kinds of cooperation on policy design and implementation, as well as principles, metrics, definitions, and standards are needed? What would more inclusive processes for establishing them look like?

Where do current trade patterns, policies or rules present the greatest challenges or risks to interlinked nature and climate goals, and what approaches could provide opportunities or positive incentives?

What kinds of strategic approaches to cooperation on trade and trade measures in what sectors could empower low- and middle-income countries to participate in nature-positive trade in ways that support climate goals and sustainable development priorities?
