Bruce Byiers

Associate Director, Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Development Cluster, European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM)

Dr Bruce Byiers is the associate director of ECDPM's sustainable and inclusive economic development cluster. He is also a member of the management team.

Bruce is a development economist with a PhD from the University of Sussex. He is Associate Director for ECDPM's economic cluster - covering trade, regional integration, finance, food, climate and digital governance. His experience is mainly from working on and in Africa, where he is particularly experienced in applying political economy approaches to identify where interests within and between states help or hinder progress across the inclusive, sustainable, and economic integration agendas. This includes the AfCFTA and regional trade corridors and trade facilitation, but also (green) industrialisation issues and the impacts of EU trade and green policies on the Global South.

Prior to joining ECDPM in 2011, Bruce worked as a consultant for UNIDO, USAID, the World Bank and DANIDA, among others. Bruce also worked in the Mozambican ministry of planning and development and finance for five years, as an ODI fellow and subsequently as a consultant and researcher in the macro-economic projections unit of the national budget directorate, and the directorate for policy studies and analysis.
