About this session

This session will explore key trends on the trade, climate, and sustainable agricultural interface, and review the role of trade policies and positive trade incentives in fostering sustainable agriculture production and consumption in the context of the urgent need for climate mitigation, adaptation, and climate-resilient agriculture.

It will identify opportunities for enhanced trade cooperation on sustainable agriculture, food systems, and nature in support of the global climate agenda and sustainable development goals, recognizing the central importance of food security, nutrition, and livelihoods.

The dialogue will take place in a “brainstorming mode” and will provide an opportunity for in-depth discussions on key topics for attention, including the role of international cooperation on trade in:

(i) Fostering sustainable agricultural production and consumption, and reducing the climate (and nature) impact of the agricultural sector.

(ii) Removing perverse incentives such as environmentally harmful agricultural subsidies, recognizing their impacts on both climate and nature.

(iii) Supporting positive incentives for sustainable agricultural production and consumption that supports sustainable development.

(iv) Ensuring that trade-related policies and measures pursuing climate objectives are effective and support sustainable development, avoiding both unnecessary trade-distorting effects and negative development impacts.

(v) Ensuring food, nutrition, and livelihood security in the face of climate change.
